Family Field Study
For this family field study I decided to speak to my Grandaddy. From my past blogs I've mentioned how I've grown up around him and how his music taste has really impacted my life as a musician. I want to let it be known we had to do this over facetime and he is 80 years old. I was looking at the ceiling the entire time.
Jahliah: Hey Grandaddy how are you today?
Grandaddy: I'm doing alright how about you?
Jahliah: I'm doing just about the same. Grandaddy you do know why we are talking right.
Grandaddy: Because you can't get enough of me
Jahliah: Please! Grandaddy we are here to talk about music. Who did you grow up listening to when you were younger?
Grandaddy: I grew up listening to a little bit of everything. But once I got older and in my teens I was listening to Motown. The Miracles, The Spinners, The Spunk Brothers, Gladys Night and The Pips.
Jahliah: Who was your favorite out of all of them
Grandaddy: Gladys Night and The Pips oooo she can sing
Jahliah: When you were listening to music back then what did you feel and what instruments stood out to you?
Grandaddy: Are you trying to call me old?
Jahliah: No Grandaddy just answer the question
Grandaddy: Well during that time it was the Civil Rights music black people were going through quite a bit. So when I was listening I was enjoying the music and trying to put myself in the moment. Music can take you so many places that's why I always encourage you to keep playing. I could always hear the horn. You can tell a horn from anywhere.
Jahliah: Yes sir I know Grandaddy. As you started to mature more what became something you had to listen too?
Grandaddy: I lovee Earth Wind an Fire, The Jackson 5, and my favorite James Brown. I've seen all of them perform live a few times. You talk about artist man you don't know anything about that.
Jahliah: Yeah I loveee some Earth Wind and Fire. You know I've learned so much about music from you. You are the music man. And I also know you loveee James Brown. You started my record collection. Most of my albums are filled with your music.
Grandaddy: Oh Yeah I know. You have almost all my records.
Jahliah: Yeah because you gave them to me. And I take very good care of them. Out of all the concerts you've been to who do you feel like gave the best show?
Grandaddy: I can't believe you asked me something like that. You know who I'm gonna say James Brown (we literally said it at the same time) He had the best band from trumpets, guitars and drums plus those dance moves. Nobody can top James.
Jahliah: You do have a point
Grandaddy: I know I have a point he starts laughing
Jahliah: Well Grandaddy I appreciate you letting me take up your time.
Grandaddy: Anytime baby Anytime!
Your grandad has awesome music taste! I also love Gladys Night and the Pips and Earth, Wind, and Fire!
